Glaucoma treatment
Glaucoma is a group of diseases with diverse origins. However, common features include elevated intraocular pressure, visual field constriction, and signs of progressive optic nerve atrophy. These symptoms can ultimately lead to irreversible blindness if timely treatment measures are not taken.
The disease is known as the «silent thief of sight» because it often develops without noticeable symptoms until the disease has reached an advanced stage.
Sometimes, an acute attack of glaucoma may occur, accompanied by sharp eye pain, severe headache on the affected side, and sudden vision deterioration. If these symptoms appear, you should seek immediate ophthalmic attention!
Risk groups:
1. Patients over 60–70 years of age, even without any eye complaints.
2. After age 40, those who have:
– intraocular pressure at the upper normal limit;
– a difference in intraocular pressure between the right and left eyes of more than 5 mmHg;
3. High myopia after 40–50 years, high hyperopia (especially women over 50);
4. Elevated intraocular pressure, regardless of age;
5. Low (relative to age‑normal) blood pressure;
6. Diabetes, endocrine, neurological, and cardiovascular diseases;
7. Those with a history of eye trauma, inflammatory eye diseases (uveitis, iridocyclitis, etc.), or previous eye surgery;
8. Relatives (including distant) with a history of glaucoma.
