Surgical vision correction

If laser vision correction is contraindicated (for certain reasons), the patient can be offered two additional treatment methods: implantation of phakic lenses or refractive lens exchange (clear lens extraction) with IOL implantation (monofocal, toric, multifocal, or EDOF).

Implantation of phakic lenses is performed in cases of high myopia, astigmatism, or thin or irregular corneas where laser vision correction is not possible. A phakic intraocular lens (PIOL) is placed inside the eye in front of the natural lens, preserving accommodation and the ability to see at different distances.

Indications for phakic lens implantation:

— Stable myopia from 4.00 D to 20.00 D with or without astigmatism.

Indications for refractive lens exchange (clear lens extraction) with IOL implantation:
— Significant refractive errors (high hyperopia, high myopia, astigmatism, including mixed astigmatism) in patients over 40–45 years of age
— Hyperopia and complex hyperopic astigmatism in individuals at risk of developing angle‑closure glaucoma (short axial length with a relatively large lens and narrow anterior chamber angle)
— Presbyopia.

Frequently Asked Questions About Surgical Vision Correction in Astana

What is surgical vision correction?

It is an alternative to laser correction when contraindications exist. It involves phakic lens implantation (PIOL/ICL) or refractive lens exchange (clear lens extraction) with IOL implantation.

What is the difference between a phakic lens and lens replacement?

A phakic lens (ICL) is implanted in front of the natural lens and preserves accommodation. Lens replacement (refractive lens exchange) involves removing the clear natural lens and replacing it with an artificial one.

Who is a candidate for phakic lens (ICL) implantation?

Patients with high myopia (from –4 to –20 D), astigmatism, or thin or irregular corneas where laser correction is not possible.

Who is recommended for clear lens replacement?

Patients over 40–45 years of age with high hyperopia, myopia, complex astigmatism, or presbyopia.

Is surgical correction painful?

No. The procedure is performed under topical drop anesthesia. The patient only feels slight pressure.

How long does the surgery take?

10–20 minutes per eye. The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis – the patient goes home the same day.

How long does recovery take?

Primary recovery takes 5–7 days. The final result stabilises within 1–1.5 months.

When will good vision return?

Vision improvement is noticeable within the first few days after surgery. Most patients see well the next day.

What are the risks of surgical correction?

Risks are minimal with modern equipment and experienced surgeons. Complications are extremely rare.

Can the surgery be performed after age 50?

Yes. For patients over 40–45, clear lens replacement is often the preferred method.

How much does surgical vision correction cost?

Phakic IOL (ICL) implantation, including toric, is 920,000 ₸ per eye. The cost of lens replacement depends on the IOL type. The exact price is determined after diagnostics.

Is the preoperative examination included in the cost?

Yes. The preoperative examination for a scheduled surgery is performed free of charge.

Will I still be able to read without glasses?

With phakic lens implantation – yes (accommodation is preserved). With lens replacement, multifocal or EDOF lenses can be selected for good vision at all distances.

How do I know which method is right for me?

Only after a comprehensive diagnostic examination. The doctor will assess your eye parameters and recommend the optimal correction method.
