Our recommendations for you after cataract phacoemulsification with IOL implantation
Instillation of eye drops.
You can instil the drops yourself, or your family members can do it. With clean hands, in a sitting or lying position, gently pull down the lower eyelid of the operated eye, look up, and instil 1–2 drops. Before instilling another drop, take a 10‑minute break.
How many times a day should you instil?
On the day of surgery, four hours after the procedure, remove the bandage and instil the drops every hour until bedtime. During the first week, instil 4 times a day, with a break for night sleep. Thereafter, the number of instillations decreases by one each week.
Eye drop regimen after surgery:
Week 1: Signicef (Oftaquix or Apdrops) + Dexamethasone OR a combined 2‑in‑1 preparation (Kombinil‑Duo, Tobradex) – 1–2 drops 4 times a day, every 4 hours.
Week 2: Dexamethasone only – 1–2 drops 3 times a day.
Week 3: Dexamethasone only – 1–2 drops 2 times a day.
It is necessary to visit the doctor after surgery!
On the 1st day after surgery, you must come for a follow‑up appointment! Your attending physician will then schedule your next appointments on the specified dates. The frequency of visits is determined individually depending on the condition of the eye.
If you experience pain, tearing, redness, or decreased vision, do not wait for the scheduled date – come for an appointment immediately!
Bandage and protective glasses.
No bandage is needed. Wearing sunglasses outdoors is very helpful. Glasses also protect the operated eye from wind and dust. Sunglasses are not needed indoors.
What not to do.
For two weeks, do not rub (scratch) the operated eye, and avoid heavy physical exertion. Avoid sudden movements and prolonged bending of the head downwards. Do not consume alcohol, do not use a sauna or take a hot bath.
Personal hygiene, sleep, nutrition, and other aspects.
Wipe the skin around the operated eye daily with a clean cloth moistened with warm boiled water.
You may eat normally, but in the first few days avoid very hard foods (e.g., crackers, raw carrots). If you are prone to constipation, take a laxative.
On the day of surgery, it is advisable to sleep on your back or on the side opposite to the operated eye. Exercise is permitted, excluding bending, jumping, and running.
Functional results.
You may read, watch television, and work at a computer immediately. Your visual acuity at different distances will depend on the type of implanted IOL and the neuroadaptation period, which is individual for each patient. If additional spectacle correction for certain focal distances is needed, consult your attending physician about the timing and procedure for fitting these glasses.
