ARGOS BIOMETER

The ARGOS Biometer is a modern optical biometer (a device for measuring ocular parameters) from Alcon (USA), primarily designed for preparation for cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.

What is this device?

Technology: Swept‑Source OCT (SS‑OCT) — swept‑source optical coherence tomography at a wavelength of approximately 1060 nm.

What it measures: A full set of biometric parameters of the eye in a single scan (under 1 second):

  • Axial length
  • Corneal thickness
  • Anterior chamber depth
  • Lens thickness
  • Keratometry (corneal curvature) and more.

Key feature — it performs excellently even in cases of very dense cataracts, where many other biometers (including some other SS‑OCT devices) cannot obtain data.

Key Advantages

  • Very high speed and success rate of measurements.
  • Built‑in Image Guidance (real‑time imaging) — assists in surgical planning.
  • Accurate IOL power calculations (including formulas for refractive surgery).
  • Non‑contact and non‑invasive.

Manufacturer and History
The device was originally developed by Movu (Santec); later, Alcon acquired the technology and actively promotes it under the ARGOS® brand. It has been on the market since 2014.

It is one of the top biometers in the world, alongside the IOLMaster 700 (Zeiss) and other SS‑OCT devices. Many clinics praise it specifically for its reliability in complex cataracts.

In short: this is a high‑tech «laser ruler» plus a tomograph for precise eye measurements before cataract surgery.
