CYCLO G6 Ophthalmic Laser System (IRIDEX, USA)

The CYCLO G6 is a specialised diode laser (810 nm) for the treatment of glaucoma using transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (TSCPC). It is one of the most popular non‑invasive / minimally invasive laser devices for reducing intraocular pressure (IOP).

Primary Indication

  • Treatment of all stages of glaucoma (open‑angle, angle‑closure, refractory).
  • Reduction of aqueous humour production by targeting the ciliary body.
  • Used both in an outpatient setting (clinic room) and in the operating room.

Key Technologies

  • MicroPulse® (micropulse mode) – gentle, tissue‑sparing. The laser beam is divided into short micro‑pulses with pauses → minimal inflammation, low risk of hypotony, and the possibility of repeat procedures.
  • Continuous Wave (CW) – classic continuous mode (for traditional TSCPC).

Main Probes (Accessories)

  • MicroPulse P3® (MP3) – the primary probe for micropulse treatment. The most popular, gentle, and repeatable.
  • G‑Probe® – for classic CW cyclophotocoagulation.
  • G‑Probe Illuminate® – with built‑in transillumination (backlighting) for precise positioning.
  • Probes are single‑use sterile items with RFID identification (SmartProbe).

Technical Specifications

  • Wavelength: 810 nm (infrared).
  • Power: 50–3000 mW.
  • Modes: CW‑Pulse and MicroPulse.
  • Cooling: air‑cooled (compact, portable).
  • Weight: approximately 3.9–4.8 kg.
  • Controls: touchscreen, illuminated buttons, foot pedal (wired/wireless), optional remote control.
  • Power supply: 100–240 V.

Advantages

  • Non‑invasive approach (no incisions).
  • Minimal inflammation and pain.
  • Can be used in early and late stages, including refractory glaucoma.
  • Repeatability of procedures.
  • Good safety profile (used in leading clinics in the USA and worldwide).
  • IOP reduction of approximately 30–45% on average (depending on mode and stage).

This is a workhorse for glaucoma surgeons, especially when an alternative to medication or filtering surgery is needed.
